6 september, 2024. Nepal is a country of unity and diversity with multi-religious, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural. Among 123 different languages and 125 ethics, Teej is one of the festivals celebrated by Hindus all over Nepal. It is the festival of love, celebration, sisterhood, and gathering. But wait! Let’s think for a seconds, are we celebrating Teej in the right way ???

The Nepali Teej festival, also known as Haritalika Teej, is the most elegant in Nepal.  On the special occasion of this festival, unmarried girls look forward to a pleasing marriage in the future, and married women pray for a healthy and long life for their husbands. The festival of Teej is primarily devoted to Goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva. On this beautiful day, women often adorns herself with red attire and accessories as the color red plays a prominent role in teej celebration. Red symbolizes luck and prosperity.

Growing up I saw my mom and sisters take ritual baths early in the morning and offer worship and homage to Lord Shiva, with light oil-fed lamps. Getting dressed up in traditional clothes, they fast for the whole day without a sip of water. The celebration of Teej means the celebration of gatherings and togetherness with companions. Traditionally, Teej was primarily about fasting and praying for the long life and well-being of husbands. Women would gather at their natal homes, fast, and perform rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. They would sing traditional Teej songs that often reflected their joys and sorrows, and dance in groups, celebrating sisterhood and shared experiences. The celebrations were more about simplicity and devotion.

However, Over the years, the way Teej is celebrated has evolved significantly. While fasting and prayers remain, there is a noticeable shift towards celebrating Teej festival these days. As  Urbanization and social media have led to more elaborate celebrations, including organized events, fashion shows, and social gatherings. especially in the city area The festival has become more commercialized, with a focus on glamour and social media presence. Today, Teej is celebrated in various ways, reflecting the changing societal norms. while others embrace modern interpretations, celebrating with dance parties and contemporary music.

In conclusion, instead of celebrating teej for social media and glamour. Let’s celebrate it to preserve our culture and traditions and promote them all over the world. As they create an opportunity for social gatherings, with family, friends, and neighbors to share feasts, laughter, and love. Teej is not just a religious event, it is a powerful celebration of feminity, unity, and devotion that unites women from all walks of life.
